چکیده

Eddy current techniques have been widely used in the NDE inspection of aircraft engine components. Depending on the flaw characteristics and specimen composition, various EC probe designs have been employed to achieve the maximum probability of detection (POD). Traditionally, the effectiveness of a probe design for a given inspection is determined experimentally. In particular, parameterssuch as probe types, operating frequency, scan spacing, etc. are evaluated experimentally in terms of POD. It is obvious that this is a costly way of defining inspection parameters. A more cost-effective alternative is to evaluate the test parameters through the use of numerical simulation. This can be done by casting the entire EC inspection process in terms of a numerical model governed by a set of integral equations. By computing the solutions to the integral equations, outputs in the form of impedance changes due to flaws can be used to generate the POD. Previously, we have introduced a modified version of the Hertzian magnetic potential approach for eddy current probe design [1]-[3]. In those papers, it was shown that the formulation can be used to solve problems with arbitrary geometries including geometrical singularities such as edges and corners. In the present paper, we have modified the boundary integral equations (BIEs) formulation for computing the impedance change in the presence of ideal tight cracks. Some umque features of this model include the allowance for arbitrarily shaped air core probes and test components that include singular geometries.

A novel boundary integral equation for surface crack model

A novel boundary integral equation (BIE) is developed for eddy-current nondestructive evaluation problems with surface crack under a uniform applied magnetic field. Once the field and its normal derivative are obtained for the structure in the absence of cracks, normal derivative of scattered field on the conductor surface can be calculated by solving this equation with the aid of method of mom...

On integral equation methods of solution to eddy current interaction problems

The eddy current method is used for nondestructive evaluation of conducting materials. To achieve a greater knowledge and insure safe and reliable evaluation methods, the use of mathematical models and simulations are needed. In this thesis integral equation methods of solutions are applied to solve the eddy current interaction problem which essentially is a scattering problem. This involves a ...

Eddy-current interaction with an ideal crack. I. The forward problem

The impedance of an eddy-current probe changes when the current it induces in an electrical conductor is perturbed by a flaw such as a crack. In predicting the probe signals, it is expedient to introduce idealizations about the nature of the flaw. Eddy-current interaction is considered with an ideal crack having a negligible opening and acting as a impenetrable barrier to electric current. The ...

DUAL BOUNDARY ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF CRACKED PLATES

The dual boundary element method is formulated for the analysis of linear elastic cracked plates. The dual boundary integral equations of the method are the displacement and the traction equations. When these equations are simultaneously applied along the crack boundaries, general crack problems can be solved in a single-region formulation, with both crack boundaries discretized with discontinu...

Solution of the two - dimensional problem of a crack in a uniform field in eddy - current non - destructive eva

A two-dimensional, time-harmonic eddy-current problem is examined in which a uniform field is perturbed by a long, surface-breaking crack in a non-magnetic, conducting half-space. The crack is assumed to be ideal in the sense that it has infinitesimal opening and yet forms a perfect barrier to the passage of electric current. A solution is sought which is accurate both at high frequencies, at w...
